Defying the years and rolling them back constantly is our man Maurice ‘Herby’ Manwaring. Herb is in some of the best golfing form of his life and he is only 82. It just so happens that number is a score that Herb shot down by a spare shot on the weekend.

It is meant to be a rare privilege and feat to accomplish shooting or beating your age with strokes played around a golf course. Our man has done it quite a few times over the past 18 months.
Our male golfers rolled up on an exceptionally warm, but blustery, spring day, to compete for Loll Johnson’s Harden Tyre Service Trophy.
Mark is thanked for his proven and ongoing support of Harden men’s golf. As stated, Herby Manwaring made a feast of it, shooting 81 off the stick for a 64 nett and 43 stableford points. For the conditions, Herb’s handicap and the prevailing years creeping up, this is a truly remarkable round. Well done.
Riding hard on Herby’s heels was Harden’s own sleuth to the stars Tom Poole.
Tom brought his A game and shot six better than his handicap for 42 stableford points, ending up a mere one shot behind our octogenarian super star, and led off the ball comp.
The ball comp was a tough old day at the office. If you did not beat your handicap by at least three shots, you were not even trying.
Balls went to Tom Poole (42 pts), Darrell Cassidy (40 pts), Craig Henman (40 pts) and Brian Wales 39 pts). Our Bendigo Bank Hole-in-One did not go off this week, however the nearest to the pin on this hole went to Tam Kennedy, who knocked one in to 3.2 metres. No word was received by this scribe as to whether it was a three or four putt effort from there ..?
The golfing community must pass on our special thoughts to the Wales’ clan and their families. One of the grand old men of Harden golf in times past, Mr Hugh Wales, departed us in recent times and has gone to play the grand links in the sky.
Hugh was a keen golfer and a just-retiring member of the Pennant Team when this scribe got to Harden 21 years ago. When seeing Hugh around the golf course, he was not big on a lot of meaningless chat, BUT when Hugh talked, you listened and invariably he was bang on the money and you picked up some very handy wisdom, borne of experience.
Our thoughts to the wider family and our thanks for having shared life in this town with a wonderful gentleman
This Saturday, the members (ladies and gents) will be competing for the Josh & Erica Glover provided trophy in an individual medley stableford event. This is a minor departure from the scheduled event, however a brief respite from ambrose was thought warranted with a few charity days to come.
Also those members who get bored without their golf on a long weekend with a daylight savings change up, can most likely find a game on Saturday and Sunday if you hit the club at or before lunch time on those days.
