The recipients of awards were Ken Pearsall for 35 years’ service; David Gibson for 25 years’ service; Lila Irving for 20 years’ service; Pat Blundell for 15 years’ service; Dot Farnsworth and Brian Farnsworth each for 10 years’ service and Clyde Smith for 5 years’ service.
Some of these awardees are only involved with the Driver Reviver unit that the Harden SES Unit operates, whilst the others also work out in the field. These awards are well-deserved and their commitment to the Harden SES Unit is a credit to their sense of community spirit.
It was a wonderful opportunity to share the opening of the new extension to the Unit’s building with the award presentation and for them to receive public commendation, not only by the NSW Deputy Commissioner for the SES, Greg Newton, but also our own local Member, Katrina Hodgkinson MP and John Horton, Mayor of Harden Shire Council.
Ros Bickford has recently taken on the role of Local Controller for the unit with Peter Blundell having stepped down from the position, after 13 years’ service as Local Controller. Peter is continuing with the Unit as Deputy Controller. Ros has been a member of the Harden SES Unit since January 2011, having transferred from the Hornsby Unit in Sydney where she and her husband lived prior to coming to live in Harden.
The Harden SES Unit have a small membership, however their commitment to helping the community is second to none as evidenced by the praise and commendation by John Horton, in his speech.
The members of the Unit are always learning new skills or practicing the skills they have already acquired and they are about to start a training module on Landsearch operations and recently had some members newly qualified for storm and water damage operations.
It is great for the Unit to have more members for their storm team, just in time for the 2015 storm season. If you are needing any information about preparing your home for the storm season, why not call in to see them on a Monday night when the members are doing their training or call the SES on 1800 201 000 for more information or go to www.ses.nsw.gov.au.
New members are always welcome and should call 1800 201 000 for more information, whilst Driver Reviver are always looking for more helpers. Anyone interested is asked to call Brian Farnsworth on 0429 664 975.
