The Hawkettes met the Yass Girlpies in the first round of the day and neither side were able to find the finishing touch, walking away with a nil-all draw in the wet early morning conditions.
As they day went on the weather improved though and so did the team as they beat Bungendore 8-4.
They followed this up with a thumping 24-0 win over ADFA, marked by Emma Manwaring running the length of the field to score a try and Emma James kicking four from four coversions.
This won them a spot straight into the final where they squared up once more against the Girlpies, and again it was a close game with neither side breaking through in the first half.
The young talent in the Hawkettes rose to the occassion though as Paige Potts found her best form of the day and Emily Quinn broke through to score the winning try.
Coach Jason Pollard singled out Jessica Doolan and Emma James as star performers in all four games.
He was impressed with his side’s performance and said the win would be great for their confidence heading in to the season.
The Hawks and Hawkettes will face Yass again for the first round of the season on Saturday May 2.
This time tough it will be back home at McLean Oval.
It will be a chance for the Hawks to get their own back against Yass, who scored a buzzer-beating try to knock them out in the semi-final of the Nines tournament.
Earlier in the day the Hawks had lost another close game to Yass before going on to beat Bungendore 4-0 and confidently beat Boomanulla 16-0.
Jason said the Yass men have improved with several players returning from Binalong and will be one of their main competitors this year.
“They are pretty strong but we are confident beating them at home,” Jason said.
The Hawks picked up a few minor injuries over the course of the day but should be at full strength for the first round of the George Tooke Shield.
They will be looking for more of the form that saw them defeat Yass three times in three encounters last season.
