Bernie Parker scored 38 points to win Brian’s trophy and to cap off a successful day also snared the nearest the pin prize on the 10th hole.
Runner-up to Bernie and leading the ball competition was Darrell Cassidy with 36 points followed by Ian Clarke-Bruce 35 points, Craig Henman, Rick Preston and Craig Filmer all with 34 points and Tim Beveridge with 33 points.
On Sunday a Dempster Cup final match was played between Eric Kuhn and Darrell Cassidy with Eric emerging the victor after a 19 hole battle. The remaining second quarter finals will be Geoff Bates V’s Brian Wales and Chris Hocking V’s Ian Clarke-Bruce. Due to unavoidable circumstances the match between Chris and Ian has had to be deferred one week with the consent of the match committee.
Ladies Championship
The first of the three rounds of this year’s ladies championships was played last Sunday. After round one the scratch division is led by Jeanette Elliott with 83, followed by Maryanne Fitzgerald with 90 and Ev Shea with 91.
The handicap division is led by Alexa Preston whose 71 nett was also good enough to win the daily trophy donated by the Kruger Trust. Hot on Alexa’s heels are the trio of Toni Filmer, Pat Walker and Marj Manwaring each with 72 nett. These three made up the daily winners of the ball competition.
Veteran’s Golf
A group of 6 Harden Veterans Golfers comprising of Allan Hill, Bill Kildea, Ron Fuller, Peter Steinke, David James and Tam Kennedy recently returned from an enjoyable week of golf at the far south coast Veteran’s Tournament. They played courses at Merimbula, Eden, Bega and Tura Beach and while no trophies were earned all players performed well to finish in the top third of a massive field of players from 35 different clubs. The main stumbling block appeared on the final day at Tura Beach where the lightning fast sloping greens caused all players to have a greater appreciation of Harden’s easy walking course with much gentler paced greens.
Because of the absence of the above mentioned six players the field for the midweek stableford competition was reduced to 16 players. Greg Heycox scored 29 points to narrowly defeat Joan Quinnell who scored 28 points with John Dowd’s 26 points in third place.
Coming up
This Saturday and Sunday the final 2 rounds of the ladies championship will be played, with the August Monthly Medal included in Sunday’s final round. On Saturday the men will play their August Monthly Medal Stroke event for a trophy donated by Thompson’s Rural.
