Safety boost for Murrumburrah Public School

Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke said Murrumburrah Public School was one of 96 schools across the state preparing to welcome a new school crossing supervisor.

"This fantastic new role will be shared by two crossing supervisors who will monitor children at the crossing on Albury Street as they walk to and from school," Ms Cooke said.

"Our young people are so precious and deserve to be able to get to and from school safely. This is an important investment in them, and also in the Murrumburrah community by creating this role."

Murrumburrah Public School Deputy Principal Renee Ford said this was a welcome investment in the school community.

"This is an important addition to our school to enable our students who use the Albury Street crossing to arrive and depart from school safely. I know our parents will warmly welcome that extra safety, knowing there will be that additional set of eyes there to supervise the students," Ms Ford said.

"This is such a boost to our road safety and the school environment, we are so grateful the NSW Government is rolling out these additional supervisors."

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the NSW Government was putting the spotlight on road safety for the regions' youngest road users who were still getting used to the road rules.

"In January last year we announced an expanded criteria, which would see 300 new school crossing supervisors fast-tracked for primary schools across the state, so that even more students could safely cross the road on their way to and from school," Mr Toole said.

"I'm pleased that of the 98 new positions, 38 of them will be in regional schools, including at ones that haven't had a crossing supervisor before.

"Our school crossing supervisors are part of a suite of measures to keep kids safe, including reduced speed limits in school zones, high-visibility safety treatments like signs, "dragon's teeth" road markings and flashing lights."
