Longtime family friend Clint Stanoway came up with the idea of holding a bike ride from Adelaide to Melbourne in 2017 and although the idea seemed crazy at first; it took off, and the riders raised over $127 000 for research into the disease.
“We didn’t even have bikes when this idea took hold.” Mr Stanoway said.
“But everyone was so supportive of the idea, we just had to do it.”
Ms Herbert agreed.
“The money we raised last year funded a whole research project.” Ms Herbert said.
“Mum battled this disease for 12 years before she lost her battle. Ovarian Cancer is very hard to detect and there is currently no early detection tests available.”
With an early detection test, survival rates could rise as high as 95%. Currently, statistics show that 1500 women will be diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in Australia alone this year, and one woman will lose her fight every ten hours.
This year, the group are tackling a ride from Canberra to the Melbourne and hope to arrive at the MCG on Sunday.
“From Harden we ride to Gundagai, then Wagga, Albury, Shepparton, Bendigo, Romsey and arrive in Melbourne on Sunday.” Mr Stanoway said.
“And we have more riders. Joining us this year is Justin Flynn, an accomplished rider whose wife Leane is locked in a battle with Ovarian Cancer.”
“I can’t thank Karen Kemp from the Muddy Duck; and the Harden Rotary Club enough for everything they are doing for us, in providing accommodation and catering, not to mention this fantastic evening.”
Entertainment at the event was provided by ‘Uncle Paul’ and ‘Counterpoint’. The night raised $800 dollars from the Rotary barbecue, $200 from the bar and $1000 in kind (accommodation and catering).
The riders have set a goal to raise $150 000 in the 2018 ride and have to date, raised $20,822.71. If you would like to donate fo to the Silver Lining web page.
