First up is Mathoura, which began life as a market garden and a pub on a drovers’ track in the mid-1800s then became an important timber industry town.
Today it’s all about a gentle country lifestyle set amid red gum forests, waterways, wetlands and the beautiful natural environment.
Mathoura is famous for the Reed Beds Bird Hide, a world class bird observatory located within the Murray Valley National Park.
You can walk along the boardwalk, read the information panels and look for yellow rosellas, superb wrens and purple swamphens.

THE Timbercutter is Mathoura’s red gum café, bar and function venue that serves up delicious woodfire pizzas, coffees, homemade treats and more.
Overlooking the junction of the Murray and Edward Rivers, the Timbercutter also pays tribute to the woodcutters who helped build Australia.

FURTHER south is Moama, famous with its twin city Echuca for its paddle steamers and now a food and wine destination in its own right.
On Sunday, May 20 the Flavours of Echuca Moama food and wine festival takes people aboard a paddle steamer from the Port of Echuca to Morrison’s Riverview Winery in Moama for a ‘grazing’ experience on the lawn.
Guests can wander the stalls, relax and enjoy the locally grown lunch options, then grab a bottle of wine and settle in for live entertainment and cooking demonstrations.
