The Jersey Girls went down 8-6 to Condobolin and the Youth League lost their game to Eugowra 28-14 after the wheels fell off in the second half.
In the women’s game Condobolin started the better of the teams as both sides struggled with slippery conditions and a cold breeze blowing from the south.
Jersey Girls struggled to get out of their own end and it was not until the 12th minute mark when the home team crossed over for an unconverted try that either side could score.
Binalong’s defence was rock solid for the whole game, however their attack failed at times through poor ball security and wild passes.
Captain Bron Pollack scored a much needed captains try at the 23 minute mark following a Condobolin mistake with the ball and Alison Giles converted to her team up 6-4 score at the break.
The second half was a desperate affair with both defences hardly giving an inch, but some relentless pressure from Condobolin at the eighth minute mark of the second term forced a line drop-out from the Jersey Girls which ultimately led to a try to the home side who went up to an unassailable 8-6 lead by the game’s end.
Sam Bailey played well all day but it was the bad passes under the pressure of finals that let the down most in the end.
In the other Woodbridge Cup matches Peak Hill Roosters defeated Trundle in first grade and Canowindra lost both of their lower grade games meaning that Grenfell live to fight another day in both the youth league and the league tag competitions.
As it stands, on Saturday in the minor semi finals Binalong and Grenfell will battle it out in both the under 18’s and women’s leagues which will be curtain raisers to the senior clash between Trundle and Grenfell. The league tag game will be at 12.30pm and the youth league kicks off at 1.40pm, while the men’s game is scheduled for 3.00pm.
On Sunday September 6 in the major semi finals at Binalong Recreation Ground, the Brahmans will play Peak Hill in the main game at 2.00pm while the Roosters meet Eugowra in the youth league at 12.40pm and Condobolin take on Eugowra in the league tag at 11.30am.
