All the merriment of Ho Ho Season out of the way and golfers keen as mustard to hit the track in the event proudly sponsored by the Harden Country Club.
Nathan Hawkins returned to the club house with a score 7 whole shots better than his handicap. Nathan returned a 79 stroke score with a 64 nett to clean up the daily event, the B Grade Scratch, the B Grade Medal and the Guzzler's Mug. What a haul. Doing not a lot wrong on the day, Nathan has put a round in that matches his ability and it will not be too long before he is a feature in the A Grade side of proceedings.
Our A Grade Scratch score and nett were equally impressive. In an effortless round of poise and grace, club general manager, Christopher Longbottom has eased his way around the difficult, dry layout like he was playing day four at Carnoustie. Chris has shot 3 under off the stick 68, and with his handicap of 1, has held A Grade with a 68 nett. Great round Chris.
Our ball comp went back to 68 nett and those rewarded included an unlucky Tam Kennedy on 66 nett, visitor Phil Reed with 66 nett, Chris Longbottom with 67 nett, and Darrell Cassidy with 68 nett. Our Bendigo Bank Hole in One was not threatened yet young Eric Kuhn picked up a ball for throwing one in to 4.5m.
Our customary Carton Draw on medal days was collected by Tam Kennedy and was drawn by one of our two visitors.
Jacqui Solah Top of the Midweek Pops
Our keenest golfer in the club is seeing her hard work pay dividends and has claimed the Midweek bag of lollies this week with a round of 30 Stableford points, a whopping 6 shots better than her handicap. The handicapper has been less than obliging though, docking Jacqui the whole 6 she beat par by, leaving her off 18 for this week.
Coming second and third this week (one of his scores equal but got done on a countback) was David James. Part-time coach and critic of Jackie's, David has said all of his special tips are staying in the back pocket for a few weeks now.
Jim Wright picked up 4th position with 28 points so it was a tough week amongst the midweek burglars this week.
Vale Peter Steinke
Sadly over the Christmas break, we lost one of our club's stalwarts in Peter Steinke. Peter was a committeeman, a one-time course greenkeeper at Harden, a very consistent and gritty 11 marker - a tough ask every time someone drew him in pennants, and a solid competitor and supporter of the club.
Quick of wit, fast with the flash of his tongue when he felt it needed, and always a feature of major club events, pennant teams for 20 plus years, inter-district and neighbouring club tournaments, as well as a Midweek regular, Peter loved his golf, of that there was no doubt. Peter even annually returned to his original stomping ground at Tocumwal.
It was very reassuring to see the Guard of Honour by Harden Country Club members at church to see Peter graduate to Heaven's No 1 Handicap Pennant Team.
Scott Fuller Shield at Harden this Sunday
It's time to dust the sticks off and turn out for our home hosting of this popular Summer Inter-District Comp. Timesheets are on the bar and all are welcome.
Shotgun from 10am Sunday so be there from 9.30am, please.
We are leading and a strong home showing is needed before round three in a few weeks time.
This Saturday
Regular golf continues with a club individual Stableford this Saturday.
