Nic Nadycz received his award for 'service to the Harden Murrumburrah community' and Niki Bolger for her 'service to nursing'.

Mr Nadycz said he received a phone call about a month before the awards were announced, but thought it was a practical joke.

"I answered a call on my mobile saying that I had been nominated for a Queen's Birthday Award, but I thought it was someone having a go at me." Mr Nadycz said.

"It wasn't until I actually received a letter saying that I had nominated, that I believed it. And of course, I wasn't allowed to tell anyone."

Mr Nadycz said that he received another call from a friend on the morning the awards were announced, congratulating him.

"I knew then, I had to get on the phone and tell all my sisters quickly before they found out from someone else and I got into trouble." Mr Nadycz said.

Always humble, Mr Nadycz said that achieving this honour has made him stop and reflect on the volunteer work he has done throughout his life, and made him realise how grateful he is to live in Harden Murrumburrah.

"This is such a great honour, the town has been really good to my family and me. I am a proud Australian, and I am grateful to my parents for bringing me to Australia." Mr Nadycz said.

"My parents came here in 1950 from Germany and we were settled into a camp in Bathurst. We eventually settled here and were accepted by this community. This town has always helped those who have needed it."

Mr Nadycz counts volunteering with APEX, running the Harden Swimming Pool and working at Murrumburrah High School in his long list of community service and has just retired from 40 years service with Fire and Rescue NSW.

"It gives you a sense of gratification to do something for someone less fortunate." Mr Nadycz said.

Mr Nacycz will be presented with his award later this year at Government House in Canberra.

"I don't know who nominated me for this award, but I am overwhelmed by the response I have received." Mr Nadycz said.

"I am truly honoured and grateful."
