The lesser-known aspects of Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe are explored in a new exhibition which opens in Speyer, Germany on Sunday.

The exhibit, dubbed "Marilyn Monroe - Die Unbekannte" (Marilyn Monroe - The Unknown Woman), tracks various aspects of the US actress's life starting with her troubled childhood in the 1930s to her mysterious death in 1962.
Many of the 400 objects featured in the exhibit have never been seen before, museum organisers said. They include a pair of Monroe's shoes, a satin nightgown and a calender she used in 1961. Some of the memorabilia is on loan from German collector Ted Stampfer.
The exhibit also includes little-known stories about Monroe including that she founded her own film society and fought for the civil rights of African American songstress Ella Fitzgerald.
The exhibit at Historisches Museum Der Pfalz Speyer runs from December 16 to June 16, 2019.
