The six young people; Mallory Biglands, Cassandra Edwards, Hannah Madden, Annalise Potts, Will Kemp and Ben Wu will be hiking up Mount Tennant ACT, which has an elevation of 1 375 metres, to help ensure that these unknown girls have textbooks, uniforms and other school supplies they need to complete their education.
The friends will be making the hike on Sunday, September 30 and the girls, at least, will be doing it in school dresses, as part of the ‘Do it in a dress’ rules.
“We decided to do this hike, because we learned that 130 million girls around the world are denied an education and it is just not right.” Will said. “Education is so important, and it should be a basic right for everyone.”
The girls agreed, and even though they have gone their separate ways since high school, the friends have remained close.
“I loved school. I have known Will since Year 1 at Murrumburrah Public School, I met Cass, Mallory and Hannah when I started at Hennessy in Year 11, and met Ben at Uni” Annalise said. “ We have formed close friendships through school and realise how lucky we have been and how important it is for everyone to have the same opportunity for education as we have had.”
The ‘Hike it up’ team have already raised $480 dollars toward their target of $650, which it is believed will educate two girls in Africa. To donate and help the ‘Hike it up’ team reach their goal, go to: www.doitinadress.com/team/hike-it-up
