Brad Cavanagh is back at home in the Hilltops after spending four exciting weeks in the United States after winning an Australian Registered Cattle Breeders Association (ARCBA) scholorship to attend the Beef Improvement Federation Conference, held in Colorado.

“The ARCBA scholarship was a great experience with a diverse range of topics covered over the four weeks.” Mr Cavanagh said.
“The conference covered research and development in all aspects of the beef industry. Notable presentations included Mark Allen from Trans Ova Genetics on cattle IVF, Mark McCully from Certified Angus Beef on Consumer preference , Professor Dorian Garrick of Theta Solutions on breeding program design and Dr Tim Bolt on understanding Pulmonary Hypertension at High Altitude”.
Mr Cavanagh said that one of the highlights of the trip was visiting US Premium Beef in Kansas City.
“That visit was very interesting. They have a unique producer owned business model allowing producers of varying scale access to premium beef markets.” Mr Cavanagh said.
He also visited some of the most successful Cattle Breeders in the US.
“Brent Theil from LT Ranch in Isobel South Dakota was a great visit. Brent would have the leading herd of Charolais cattle in the world and one of the top Angus herds.” Mr Cavanagh said.
“His ability to stay disciplined to his breeding program is a credit to him. He is an excellent role model for other breeders.“
“I also had the pleasure of visiting Ellingson Angus and Schaffs Angus Valley in North Dakota. I am pleased to have their genetics on offer at my 2018 Bull sale, to be held in July here in Harden. Seeing the progeny of bulls I have used in my own herd was satisfying. I was particularly please with the SAV Renown and Resource son.”
