The initiative raises awareness about violence and discrimination experienced by LGBTI people and the NSW Police Force (NSWPF) will once again support the event.

Inspector Alison Brennan, officer in charge at Yass Police Station, said the NSWPF had long been a supporter of the event.

“We as an organisation have always sought to organise and attend community-engagement events regarding LGBTI issues.

“This year focuses more on a virtual push to raise awareness,” she said.

Inspector Brennan – who also has the customer-service portfolio for the district, which incorporates diversity in general (among other matters) – will be attending the Goulburn Police Academy on May 17 to engage with students about IDAHOBIT.

She has also been a Gay and Lesbian Liaison Officer (GLLO), which is now know as an LGBTI Liaison Officer, for 14 years.

“It is also worth mentioning that our Commander, Superintendent Chris Schilt, is the Southern Region's Sponsor for Sexuality, Gender Diversity and Intersex.

“As such, it is an initiative which is very important to The Hume Police District,” Inspector Brennan said.

Superintendent Michael Rowan, who will also attend the academy with Inspector Brennan, said he was a strong supporter of IDAHOBIT.

“A day like this is certainly beneficial as it puts an awareness that discrimination against anyone on the basis of sexual orientation is wrong,” he said.

Support for this event has and continues to be well publicised by Assistant Commissioner Tony Crandell, who is the Corporate Sponsor for LGBTI.

The date of the event was derived from the World Health Organization's decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.
