Crookwell crooner Chalkie White is showing a new side of himself with his latest single, Gingerbread Man.

In White’s first single, New Day, he invited listeners to share his battle with cancer, diagnosed in 2016, and how it changed his outlook on life.

With his second single, Gingerbread Man, released March 12, a different chapter in his journey – a lighter side – is captured.

He’ll perform both in Harden at the Carrington Hotel on April 28.

Gingerbread Man was written by renowned US songwriter Vernon Rust, who’s worked with the likes of Keith Urban and The Ranch, Kix Brooks, and The Oak Ridge Boys.

It tells the story of a man who continually runs from commitment.

This is a theme to which many people can no doubt relate.

White said he had had an immediate connection with the song.

I believe a lot of people will relate to the song’s theme. Hopefully, they will connect to it in the way that I did the first time I heard it.

He had spent many years as a non-committal type – until his wife, Dana, came along.

The song was pitched to White “as I was going through cancer treatment,” he said.

“We spoke a few times about songwriting and me wanting to do an album.”

Rust “pitched the song to me and, from the first listen, I knew I was taking it to the studio.

“I believe a lot of people will relate to the song’s theme.

“Hopefully, they will connect to it in the way that I did the first time I heard it.”

White was just nine years old when he first picked up a guitar.

By the age of 16, he had joined a band, and by 18, was a regular entrant in talent quests.

White won the Gympie Muster Talent Search in 2001, and the Toyota Star Maker grand final at Tamworth in 2002.

Gingerbread Man is the second single to be released from White’s upcoming debut album.

The album, My Song Isn’t Written Yet, is due for release on Friday, April 13.

White will be touring across the rest of the month.
