The Binalong community was shocked to find that on Thursday, January 4, senseless vandals had broken into the Binalong Pool and caused extensive damage.
Furniture was thrown into the pool, as well as the brand new vacuum, which has been completely destroyed.
This vacuum, which cost over $6000, was only purchased at the start of this season and this mindless act will mean that another new piece of equipment cannot be purchased for the pool and or community for the 2018/2019 season.
Damage was also done at the Binalong Skatepark, which is community funded. Binalong Pool itself, was originally built using money raised by the local community.
Gill Elphinston, who is the media and communications officer at Yass Council said this was not a one-off event.
“The vandals broke into the pool by scaling the fence, which has barbed wire along the top,” Ms Elphinston said.
“They must have sustained some nasty cuts, so someone must know who they are.”
“People often ask ‘why can't council do this’ or ‘why can't council do that’ and the answer is because our staff spend countless hours and money cleaning up after mindless vandals.”
“Despite the damage that has done, the Shine Shield will go ahead this weekend,” Ms Elphinston said.
“Binalong is not the sort of community to let things like this get in the way of an event for the kids.”
Council has cleaned up the damage and we are working around the pool cleaning by borrowing a vacuum from Yass Pool.
“We know the community of Binalong is a close one and we are pleading with the community to help us find those responsible. If you know anything about this incident please contact Yass Police Station on 6226 9399.”
