As we know, our Hilltops region has a unique beauty, agricultural richness and associated vibrancy of industry. The combination of ‘cherry capital of Australia,’ ‘heart of wheat country,’ and ‘superb country’ has combined to paint a picture of dynamic potential. 

I was previously part of Young Council when it was the fastest growing council west of the Great Divide. The combined input of council and community has the potential for this to again happen within Hilltops. Absolute brilliant ideas are being put forward by community, development applications are being submitted to bring our area alive, and committed grant applications have been compiled.

For me however, attitudes have to first change to bring it all alive and happening. It is easy to be disillusioned by objections to proposals for development that we are observing. For Hilltops Council to even keep astride of the rate of advancement at state level we as a community, and as a council, need to adopt realistic and creative thinking and a planning ethos for the sake of future generations and together positively embrace all development submissions.

The crowds that supported the Cherry Festival – despite the challenging weather – are a reminder of what Hilltops has to offer in attractiveness and resilience. May we have the ability to continue to harness and transform that “can do” attitude in all our endeavors; embrace the moment.
