Four contrasting pieces from the choir’s repertoire were chosen for Dr Sarah Penicka-Smith to dissect and give tips on how to improve the overall quality of performance.
Over four hours, those gathered practised ‘Singlish’, training in clear diction, vowel sounds, dynamics and word endings, all with memorable strategies.
An hour-long concert followed featuring the four workshopped songs conducted by Dr Sarah Penicka-Smith. The concert also drew on songs old and new from the Hilltop Choir’s repertoire conducted by its musical director Rodney Clancy, all of which received enthusiastic applause from an appreciative audience.
A big thank you must go to accompanist Stewart Bruce whose fingers were kept extremely busy the whole time.
Dr Sarah Penicka-Smith was very happy with the way the choir responded to her training methods.
“I was made very welcome by all those present and enjoyed the experience very much. The Hilltops Choir is an excellent community choir and I was impressed with their challenging repertoire. Dr Penicka-Smith said. “The choir has certainly achieved a lot in the ten months since its formation.”
Anyone who loves singing is most welcome to join the Hilltops Choir. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings, 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm; including a light supper break, at the Young Uniting Church Hall. For enquiries, contact secretary Tracey Clark on 0418 672 622.
