“Life is a lot calmer in country towns,” Mr Stewart said. “We were living in Canberra and were involved in ‘Zac’s Place’, which we set up in Yass as a safe space for people from all walks of life to come and be part of the community.”
“We became aware of a need for rural short to medium term housing so that people could stay in familiar surroundings and not be moved to the big cities if they were dealing with domestic violence or mental health issues.” Mr Stewart said. “A house became available in Harden, Ros and I renovated it with help from volunteers, and it has been used for crisis accommodation ever since.”
“That is the wonderful thing about country towns and especially Harden; people are willing to put up their hands when help is needed.” Mr Stewart said. “ We have been overwhelmed with people’s generosity and willingness to help out with whatever we need.”
The Stewarts wanted to set up a business enterprise to pay their way and looked at setting up several businesses, including second hand furniture and clothing.
“My brother was selling a gym in Wagga, which Ros and I were able to purchase at ‘brother’s rates’.” Mr Stewart said. “We were able to set up in the old supermarket building and run activities for everyone from seniors to youth groups and even tiny tots.”
“We run weekly classes for seniors, which incorporate a broad range of exercise and interests.” Mr Stewart said. “I love the willingness of seniors to share their life experiences and knowledge, which I believe is their greatest asset.”
“As part of our Youth Group program, we recently took our Friday night group to visit at Southern Cross Care St Lawrence Apartments.” Mr Stewart said. “Everyone enjoyed the visit and we hope to do it again.”
“Ros and I are very happy to be a part of the Harden community, it is a great place for us as foster parents, to raise children. And our grandkids love to visit us here.”
