Lighten up
I must admit I quite enjoyed Joan Fairbridge's letter regarding Australia day (“Raise all four flags”, The Border Mail, August 31).

It was definitely time for a bit of humour on the subject.
As for George Krooglik's reply to my letter, I will only say that Captain Cook claimed British occupation of the eastern half of the continent on August 22, 1770, and it was symbolised by the raising of the flag on January 26, 1788. Captain Arthur Phillip was indeed the commander of the first fleet at the time.
Captain Cook was killed in Hawaii in 1779 a year later and the significance of George Krooglik pointing this out completely escapes me.
More luck to you Joan Fairbridge.

So Councillor Tim Quilty says that the Wodonga Historical Society should get out and about and raise $100,000 for a museum.
I would like to point out to Cr Quilty that the Wodonga Historical Society was pushed from pillar to post to get a meeting place.
Firstly, there was the library and we got pushed out of there.
Tony Conway then offered his premises in South Street, but with the change of ownership were out of a meeting place again, and then the Wodonga Football Club gave us the use of their club rooms in Vermont Street.
It would suit Cr Quilty and some of his “learned colleagues” on Wodonga Council to take a stroll down to “Congestion Corner”, formerly Elgin Boulevard and High Street, and do something about the bedlam that exists at this point, with cars backed up to the post office, or the water tower or down to Elgin’s Hotel.
The Wodonga Historical Society has battled good and hard to render a service about the people and the history of Wodonga and district in bygone days.
Perhaps if Cr Quilty would like to add to his knowledge, if he does have any in regards to the Wodonga Historical Society, then perhaps he would like to sit in on one of our meetings.

Message is clear
Houston in Texas is suffering its third 1-in-500 year flood event in three years.
The probability of three such events occurring in a short space of time is 1 chance in 125,000,000.
Is it possible that the climate is changing?

A splendid show
I have always loved my Rice, but last night at the Hothouse Theatre I had the best dish yet.
I watched in amazement as two actors enthralled the audience for over an hour.
These two talented actors strode the same minimalist set all the while transforming between their many characters. They carried off these changes seamlessly and with great aplomb, there were minimal costume changes – including some knock-off Prada – and accents from around the world.
The ovation at the conclusion of this remarkable performance reinforced what I am learning as a newcomer to the area – that the arts in the region are flourishing and a vital component to a healthy community.
I would like to say congratulations to Hothouse Theatre.

One of each, thanks
Mums and dads all know how important they are to their children. Why, they're the first two words a child learns. So why change the status quo?
Why deprive a child of the possibility of having a mother and a father? Why muck up God's natural order of things?
Could these deprived children later have a case against the government? I believe so.
