Teams travelled from Crookwell, Tuggeranong, North Canberra, Boorowa, Boomanulla and Binalong.
It turned back the clock with the surrounds of the grounds chock-a-block full of spectator vehicles and the canteens were certainly a popular meeting point.
The committee extend their thanks to all its volunteers for helping in the elements, it was nearing dark by the time we shut up shop and farewelled the Boorowa bus.
Most of the results finished as expected throughout the day with some entertaining games on display.
It was the second of the ladies fixtures that revved up the support from the local crowd as our local Hawkettes opened their semi finals campaign with a ‘just above par’ performance against their Boomanulla counterparts, the Hawkettes recorded a sound 22-8 victory.
They showed some glimpses of brilliance in attack, led by a beautiful kick and chase to score under the posts by the group’s Best and Fairest player Emma James in the early stages of the first half, this was complimented by a set “red sweep” play for another try to Maddi Douglass which gave the girls a bit of confidence and just reward for the things that they practice at training.
For whatever reason the Boomnaulla tags seem to be wind assisted as our girls found them difficult to dislodge, however it was credit to our girls as they were required to do a little bit more than usual tidy up work in the second line of defence.
Jessica Doolan tagged herself breathless as she lead from the front of the defence line all game, she was well supported by Em Quinn, Clare and Georgia and Molly Fred really injected herself when called on from the bench, it wasn’t all ‘doom and gloom’ though as the girls always seemed to have the game under control for the duration of the match.
Try scorers included Clare Smith, Maddi Douglass and two to Emma James along with three goals which really capped off a great week for Emma, on the back of her being awarded the GT Shield Best and Fairest League Tag player for 2017. The grand-final re-match against Bungendore is Sunday at Crookwell.
