First up was the 12/13 Coopers Butchery side who took on Coota Blue. A big crowd had gathered at kick off, and it was soon apparent that this game was going to be a nail biter. After conceding an early goal, Harden fought hard to keep Coota at bay until regrouping at half-time.
A penalty to Harden was converted into Harden's first goal, and they soon found themselves in the lead with another. With barely five minutes of regular time left, a penalty to Coota inside Harden's 18 yard box allowed Coota to level before full-time, 2-all. Another 10 minutes each way was needed to decide the winner, yet after extra time, neither team was able to break the deadlock, and joint winners were declared.
Harden SFM Spreading 14/15s took on the strong finishing Temora. Their last meeting was a 5-0 win to Harden, and they were entitled to feel confident of success. From the opening whistle, it was obvious that previous meetings meant little, as Temora played fast, clean football which lead to their first goal, and put Harden on the back foot. Time and again, Harden's defenders were forced to work hard to repel the free flowing Temora attack. A late first half goal kept Harden in touch at 1-all at the break. A tight second half followed, and once again Harden was forced to find an equaliser after conceding another goal. Temora looked sharp and it seemed that if they were to score again, the silverware would likely be heading west. However, a big last 15 minutes saw Harden draw level, and with time running out, were able to score their final goal and take the lead for the first time. A tense final five minutes felt like 20 to the strong contingent of Harden supporters, but the team held on to claim the win 3-2.
Aall four teams, are to be congratulated on the quality of soccer displayed in each of the grand finals. The quality of play, the closeness of each game, and the great spirits in which they were played, is a credit to all involved. Coaches Peter Stone and Michael Halls can now relax and reflect on a satisfying season behind them and their teams.
