Disease mapping is a key tool in public health as it helps researchers understand risk factors and helps governments identify the distribution of disease across geographic areas. It creates an evidence base to help prioritise investment in targeted local interventions. But, when it is done the wrong way - as it increasingly is - then it can actually cause more harm than good.
