All but two of the earthquakes recorded less than magnitude 3, with the two largest earthquakes hitting 3.2 and 3.3 on the Richter scale. The largest earthquake was felt within 15km of the site. The epicentre of the earthquakes is spread out along a 10km long ellipse shape just outside of Reid’s Flat and Taylor’s Flat and north of the village of Rugby and town of Boorowa.
The Australian government’s Geoscience Australia department said the pattern of the quakes may just be an artifact of the location algorithm or of the reading of phase arrivals, meaning the quakes may all be happening in a much smaller volume.
“We can’t predict whether the swarm will just peter out, which is usual, or lead to something larger,” Seismologist Kevin McCue said.
