Poor weather failed to deter the die-hard dog fans in 2016 and with fair weather predicted across the three-day event starting Friday, July 28, a massive turnout is expected.

Over 500 dogs are currently registered to compete this weekend and event spokesperson Raylene Slade couldn’t be happier with the build-up to one of Harden’s biggest attractions.

“We have bigger numbers than last year and over 100 breeds have entered into our various categories,” Mrs Slade said.

“Some of the top winning dogs in Australia will be attending and we’ve got at least 500 entries in total.”

It’s not just canine quality on display with a number of respected interstate judges expected to hit Harden for Hilltop Shire’s largest annual dog show.

“We’ve got officials from Queensland flying down and a number of these judges have also worked in international dog competitions,” Mrs Slade said.

As per usual, the judging will be divided into six groups, consisting of toy breeds, terrier, gun dogs, hounds, utility and non-sporting. 

Dogs will initially compete against their own breed and will progress to ‘Best in Group’ if successful.

“It’s such a wonderful event and if you’re in Harden or Hilltop Shire this weekend, join us for a great three-day event,” Mrs Slade said.

“All the motels are looking pretty well booked and the Showgrounds really is the place to be this weekend.”

Moteliers across Harden and Murrumburrah are yet to enjoy the spoils of canine-oriented patronage but many are hopeful bookings are on the horizon.

“We haven’t noticed a large increase – there wasn’t for last year’s event either – but it would be great to have some more guests in town,” said Heggaton artHouse apartments host Karen Kemp.

“Business is fairly slow in Murrumburrah at the moment so hopefully this brings people into town.”

Harden Motel owner Alison Dobeher agreed, stating that the show hadn’t sparked an increase in bookings and rooms were still available ahead of the regional blockbuster event.
