ROUND one leaders in the Men’s 4BBB Club Championship took their three point lead and did not rest on their laurels for round two. Herby Manwaring and Michael Baldry have used the jibes and sparring around the club and in last week’s golf news, and used it to their advantage. They put in another 47 to beat their round two field by two points, giving them a combined six point lead overall.

Our winners have had 47/47 for 94 points, whilst runners up Peter Steinke and Rick Preston, 44/44 for 88 points. This emphatic victory continues Herby’s great run of form over the last 12 months which have seen him claim several major club events and also shoot his age many times, now into his 80s.
Herby wonders where his head was at in his 30s if this was the golf he could play now in his 80s. Michael has done well in his partner selection but individually he has put in some event winning scores himself over the last two rounds.
Round 2 was sponsored by Herby Manwaring & Eric Kuhn who are the regular dynamic duo, however family commitments put paid to that this year. As mentioned, Herby and Michael picked up the day’s event along with the overall silverware. Balls to Ian Bruce and Bernie Parker, 45, Craig Filmer and Ron Page, 45, and David James and Bill Kildea, 44.
Ian Bruce has recorded the best individual score for the day with a very special 42. I am sure that Ian being summoned to the Handicappers tent will go down an absolute treat as he is sure to have been slashed at least a shot for this round. Ian backed his day’s form up by taking the Bendigo Bank NTP. His shot was 8.18 metres from the pin and was hardly as intimate as Peter Steinke’s from two weeks prior, which broke hard for a last four inch vertical drop.
ON SUNDAY SWDGA pennants kicked off and Young hosted the nett handicap division. Harden’s finest were to play Gundagai; last year’s flag winners.
In a closer tussle than the score indicates, our team got a 4 to 1 victory. In match five, our captain came from three down through 10 to win one up on the 18th. Rick Preston held strong to register a win by three up with two to go. Peter Steinke played a budding junior from Gundagai where Peter shot a strong four up lead and 2 -1 win.
Tam Kennedy gave nine shots after a tactical ploy by opposing captain with a rogue line upchange, and this proved too tough with Tam losing 3-2. Our gun Matt Peisley took on a lot shorter handicapper, and took him for a lesson, picking up the match 6-4. Coota and Young had a close tussle, Coota prevailing by 3-2. Our team sits at number one after the first round with three to go.
