While Wagga trainer Chris Heywood celebrated the win of Mitchell Road in the feature race at Murrumbidgee Turf Club, son Nick was turning heads at Newcastle.
Nick rode five of the eight races at the provincial TAB meet. He had eight rides for five winners, a second and a third. Only one of his winners started favourite.
At Kurrajong race day at Wagga, Mitchell Road ($8.00) upset a strong field to win the Thomas Bros Group Cup (1200m), the second leg of a winning double for jockey Brad Clark.
“It was a great ride and a very good win,” Chris Heywood said.
“It was a good, strong, tough win against a very good field.”
Daughter Brittany was not to be left out, with Heywood praising her for her efforts with Mitchell Road at trackwork.
Mitchell Road beat Termele ($11.00) by a half length, with $3.20 second favourite Rock On Zariz third.
He was also rapt with Nick’s efforts at Newcastle.
“Super proud,” he said.
Nick Heywood has now had 10 winners and three placegetters from his last 20 rides.
