IN A fit of disgust two months ago, Bernie Parker, (in the green golfing pharmaceutical truck) could feel the ravages of time taking metres off his drives, so he trotted off to a golfing sales company and said “gimme some new weapons like the big boys use”. Suitably equipped with the same set of woods that Jason Day uses, Bernie thought all of his prayers were answered but for almost three weeks, Bernie could not get one straight or higher than a knee crusher. He experimented with the eye glasses, he threw the sticks down, he almost tried to jump on the buggers. He started to come close to drowning his sorrows and contemplating retirement.

Saturday saw all the pain and angst vindicated with a thumping big win, a whole six shots better than his ailing handicap. Whilst not quite making Jason Day’s 300 metres off the tee, Bernie has now got the swing speed slow enough for the technology to work, and the results are dynamic.
Leading off the ball comp and a mere shot behind at 41 stableford points was the “Hole in One Man” Peter Steinke who apparently saw them like soccer balls all day along with Tim Beveridge also on 41 . Other ball winners included John Hawkins, 40, Matt Peisley/Piesley/Paisley, 39, Rick Preston, 39, Tim Davis, 38, and Tom Darmody, 38.

Our next round needs to be played by June 17 and will feature Tim Davis vs Todd Elliott, John Brownhill vs Ian Bruce, Rick Preston vs Kevin Hoppe and Bernie Parker vs Ron Kerr.

THE handicapper and Midweek Secretary has come out and advanced his own name for the chocolates this week. Garth Webb has put together a round of 30 points on the par 24, 12 hole format. Garth has had to deduct from himself a whole six shots, resuming battle this week on a new subtractor of 14.5. Still seems high to me.
From the field of 22 players there were some very good scores shot over the week. In second and warming up for the weekend was Peter Steinke and his posse member Bill Kildea locked together on 29, then June Spencer and Ian Bruce on 27.

THE gents play the first of the season’s majors with the Club 4BBB Championship on Saturday and the ladies are set for an individual stableford.
