Members of the Goolagong Historical Society had come to Murrumburrah last year to see the sculpture of ‘Bill’ and one of the ladies saw the model and remarked that her mother-in-law had served in the AWLA.
On July 27, 1942, the Australian Women's Land Army (AWLA) was established as a national organisation to replace the male farm workers who had either enlisted in the armed services or were working in other essential war work such as munitions, with female volunteers. Mr Valerius decided to donate the sculpture to the Goolagong Historical Society.
Judy Moriarty, Goolagong Historical Society member, said the Society was thrilled to be given this sculpture to honour the AWLA.
“It is just stunning,” Mrs Moriarty said. “We cannot wait to have it hung in our museum.”
