The man with the crazy Hawaiian shirts and the cheesy big grin has held on to win the weekend’s Club Stableford competition sponsored by the Country Club.
John Brownhill is always fun to have a round with, moreover with the faces son-in- law Matt pulls behind him on the putting green, but quick with a joke and always on for a yarn. John has held on with a very handy 42 points and a better back 9 to edge out the in-form Brian Wales. At 42 points, both of these gents have recorded very handy rounds of 6 shots better than their handicap.
Brian Wales has led off the ball comp with his 42 points. Also awarded balls wer Darrell Cassidy on 40 points, Matt Peisley another 39 point week, and Robert Bates who had 37 points, still better than his handicap.
The Bendigo Bank Hole in One did not go off and once more Tam Kennedy got closest to the pin. Tam could only manage 8 metres from the pin this week and I would bet he nearly did not mark it off the recording sheet at that distance. It just never shows to go you.
And It’s Kennedy ………….Again !!
So I think it was last week I made mention of the crazy scoring in midweek. Maybe it has been every week. Tam Kennedy, fresh after winning last week’s Par event on Saturday, has extended his purple patch to midweek.
If he shoots a good score, instead of ringing Garth, he texts this scribe to get the late mail. Most weeks it is with a grin like a split watermelon I text him back to advise he has lost by the thickness of a tally ho paper. This week, no text and now I can see why. Tam has recorded a round for the ages with 35 stableford points for a par 24 point, 12 hole competition. Tam has recorded almost a 3 point average on every hole with his grossly inflated midweek handicap.
Tam was playing of 17.5 can you believe it? He is on 13 handicap on Saturdays for 18 holes. Well all of the 11 points he beat par by, have now been disposed of like last week’s trash. Tam will resume duties on a more respectable 6.5 handicap from this week.
As I remarked also last week, there are a tribe of regulars pottering away in the minor places and it will be their time soon. Mike McPake is currently bridesmaid of the month picking up this role again this week with 28 points. Yes Kennedy won by a clear 7 point margin (showboating is what it is !!). Third and the professional card marker for winners for at least 4 of the last 7 weeks was Garth Webb with 24 points. Take the tip, be there early, control the card draw and get Garth to mark your card if aiming to win the midweek comp. It’s that easy…….
This Week
Bernie Parker’s rain as chief holder of the pewter mug is almost gone. Knowing Bernie he will be up at the Club from 11am on Saturday to get his last few victims and drops of amber nectar before it hits the dishwasher.
