Young Bowling Club’s Leslie Johnson said she was surprised after reading the news on Tuesday night.
Haisem Zahab was arrested on Tuesday at his property in Young in NSW's south-west, for allegedly attempting to research and design a laser warning device and missiles for IS over the internet.
“I suppose he thought he was under the radar in a place like Young,” Ms Johnson said.
“I imagine he thought they wouldn’t find him.”
Ms Johnson said it was the number one topic on everyone’s lips.
“The chatter among the ladies was how difficult it would be for other Muslims in the area,” Ms Johnson said.
“It makes it a bit uncomfortable for them.”
It was later revealed the extended family of the electrician was already on the police radar, for funding an arms racket linked to the terrorist group.
Ms Johnson said the revelation hasn’t evoked fear in the community.
“I think people realise he is just one person and it could happen anywhere,” Ms Johnson said.
“It’s just another realisation that there is good and bad in everyone and there is crime everywhere.”
Mr Zahab will face court in Parramatta on March 8.
