A healthy field turned out to begin the first round counting towards the Summer Championships for 2016/2017.
Low scoring was another feature of last weekend's golf with 65 nett proving to be the winning score. This score was brought home by Craig Filmer who finally hit some form for the year, extending on and proving that was not his wife who carried him the previous weekend at the Scott Fuller inter district event.
Craig shot a very nice 77 being six shots better than his handicap, to claim A Grade best scratch, A Grade medal, the day's prize and also the Guzzler's Mug.
In the B Grade medal stakes, Craig's usual travelling companion to golf each Saturday, Tam Kennedy, took the honours. Tam Kennedy shot a 66 nett, one shot back from Craig's score, to be narrowly defeated for the day's event and the mug. Tam's score was five shots better than his handicap having recorded 81 off the stick to also claim the best B Grade scratch score for the day.
Tam led off the ball competition with his 66 nett, closely followed by Ron Kerr who is still in form (68 nett), Herby Manwaring (68), John Hawkins (69) and Ron Page (69). That's correct, you had to play two better than your handicap to even get a ball, let alone figure in the placings.
Nearest the pin on the Bendigo Bank Hole in One Par 3 this week went to John Hawkins with 1.28 metres.
The flag has been getting peppered in the past few weeks and I suspect that the $1000 account at the Community Bank may soon get claimed.
The big box of brown sandwiches on a card draw was popularly won by Ian Bruce, who was last seen grinning and claiming that is the only thing he could win at golf lately.
Ron Fuller Snr blitzes midweek
Yes that's right – Ron Fuller Snr won it. Ron has shown a clean set of heels and recorded a score 10 whole shots better than his handicap to street the field in this popular midweek competition.
In the par 24 point stableford competition, Ron has had a mere 34 points to shatter his opposition. What has been shattered is Ron's handicap, though. The whole 10 shots under his card have been chopped away to leave a new handicap of 18.5, which should now challenge Ron's powers.
Next in the running with an equally impressive 32 points (eight under handicap) was Alan Hill. Next back on third were Bill Kildea and Peter Orr and Ron Fuller's warm up Wednesday score of 30 points.
A reminder if your name is not in the book with paid or $6 beside it, you are not in the competition.
Midweek players are reminded that it is their responsibility to make sure that they are recorded.
Summer golf is a must do at the Harden Country Club. See you there.
