Darrell Cassidy and Craig Filmer both shot 79 off the stick for a 67 nett or 4 better than handicaps each, as did Ron with his 2 on the par 3, 18th hole. Craig had Darrell edged out on a countback as clubhouse leader while late starters Ron Fuller and Brett Johnson were winding their way around the course.
Ron and Craig’s back 9 were square, their back 6 holes were square but Ron’s birdie on 18 and Craig’s missed par putt on the same hole would prove to be the difference. Ron prevailed, but as Ron’s company was principal sponsor of the event, Craig left with the day’s prize as his consolation so all was good for the Club’s 2 Cronulla fans.
The B grade medal was claimed by Mike McPake with a 68 nett, also bettering his handicap by the handsome margin of 3 strokes on the day. The B grade scratch score winner, and collector of many premium balls this year in this division was Robert Bates with a tidy 86 off the stick.
Balls went back to 71 nett and were gathered by most of the usual suspects. Darrell Cassidy obviously led the ball comp with his narrow miss for the A medal as well, Mike Mcpake on 68, Robert Bates with 70 nett, Ian Bruce shot 71 and Tam Kennedy also claimed a ball for playing to his handicap.
The Bendigo Bank Hole in One 10th did not go off but the nearest the pin went to Herbie Manwaring who was in reasonably tight at 3.2 metres. The random box of 24 brown sandwiches went to Mr Random himself, John Brownhill.
Bruce Into Dempster final
Semi Final No 1 in the highly prestigious club matchplay championships was also played on Saturday. In a very determined match, Ian Bruce has prevailed over Peter Steinke comfortably in the end to claim this match. Ian now progresses to the final for the famous Dempster Cup, and will be eagerly awaiting the winner of the match between Kevin Hoppe and Craig Henman.
Kildea claims midweek, as predicted
As forecast last Thursday by this scribe, Billy Kildea placing over the last couple of weeks and in a rich vein of form had not escaped those watching this event. Billy has played 6 shots better than his handicap to record a whopping 30 stableford points on the 24 point par layout.
Fortunately for the field, every one of those 6 shots has been obliterated by the mean and callous handicapper to knock our winner back to a new handicap of 16.
Bill has led the field last week by 2 whole points to David James and Peter Bolton who recorded 28 points. Of particular note was 4th place finisher in Alan Hill who despite his recent run, has shot 3 better than his handicap.
