Players from all codes and grades donned the black arm band over the weekend to pay tribute to the youngster who tragically passed away last week after collapsing on the football field in Gundagai last Sunday.
Early on Saturday morning the Harden and Cootamundra junior soccer players observed a minute’s silence. The two clubs had numerous battles in all different grades and the matches were played in great spirits.
Up at McLean Oval the Harden Hawks senior team were joined at the start of the match by the Hawkettes, the Youth League Hawks and the Crookwell Green Devils in pausing to reflect on Lui’s passing.
Harden won the match 22-8 in a hard fought encounter. Riley Manwaring continued his rich vein of form with two tries, skipper Luke Brown got one as did Charlie Butt and Luke Snedden. In tough conditions Andrew Jones made just the one conversion. The Harden League Tag girls lost 12-16 to the She Devils.
In a fitting tribute Lui’s best mate, Tom Butt wore Lui’s headguard in the under 18’s match which the Hawks won 18-12. The youthful Hawks were down 8-0 early on but the team rallied to get the points.
In Woodbridge Cup, Binalong Brahmans made their way up to Trundle where they encountered the Boomers.
As expected the seniors suffered a heavy 70-12 defeat, but the League Tag held on to win 6-4 and the Calves Youth League side kept their undefeated season in check with a gutsy 10-6 victory.
