From haiku to bush ballads, sonnets to slam, metaphors to music, you never know quite what you’ll get at the Binalong Arts Group Inc’s open mic event. One thing you can be guaranteed of is a wide variety of poetic styles and variations, all presented under the historic roof of the former Cobb and Co Inn that now suffuses each Brush with Poetry with atmosphere.

Co-organisers and award-winning poets Lizz Murphy and Robyn Sykes keep the show rolling and welcome the dedicated band of poets and the audience who support them, as well as the new faces that help give the gathering its eclectic charm.

Mein host Yvette Gilroy opens the heart of the Black Swan for the regular poetry event. You can almost see the shadows of poets past clinking glasses in front of the open fire and settling into the cosy sofas to enjoy the afternoon. You can almost imagine them eyeing the coffee and cakes with longing!

Held on the last Sunday of every second month, A Brush with Poetry is quickly becoming a must-see event on the Yass Valley’s arts calendar. Come for a light lunch, or at 1.30pm for coffee/wine/cake. The poetry begins at 2pm and continues for a couple of hours, with a good break to enjoy the art, replenish refreshments or take a quick stroll around the courtyard.
