For Tim Davis and Bob Head a 10km hike with a weighted pack is all in a day’s work as they prepare for the trip of a lifetime.
This time next week the brothers-in-law will be in Papua New Guinea, about to follow in the footsteps of our bravest soldiers on the Kokoda Track.
“I think the Anzac tradition speaks to every Aussie male in some way,” Tim said.
“Not many people realise without Kokoda, our country wouldn’t be what it is today.”
Both men have strong family connections to the Australian military, and Bob’s uncle even served with a bomber squadron out of Darwin during WWII.
They are not just undertaking the mammoth trek for their own sake though- Tim and Bob are raising money to help Harden Ladies Hospital Auxiliary purchase a new x-ray machine.
“We want to do anything we can do to help this great little town,” Bob said.
He believes moving back to the hometown of his wife Karen, Tim’s sister, is “the best thing we’ve ever done.”
After exceeding their initial expectations the pair now say they will be happy to raise between $5,000 and $10,000 toward the $80,000 piece of vital equipment.
The support keeps rolling in as well, from local businesses to collection tins and even an Elvis impersonator donating his time with a fundraising concert.
On top of that, the pair will also be giving back to the PNG community.
They are taking footballs, jerseys, paperback books and more to donate to village schools along the way.
Whilst the 12-day journey may be daunting, the pair say they have so far grown closer through the experience.
In fact they are already thinking about their next adventure.
“We were talking about Kosciuszko for a start and we’ve even mentioned the Inca Trail and Everest base camp,” Tim said.
“We have to get through this first though- we’ll either come back better mates or we’ll hate each other.”
