In 76 overs with the ball he took 27 wickets, recorded 15 maidens and went for just 276 runs, which he capped with an impressive 5/21 against Murrumbateman.
Jeff’s talent was recognised at the Yass District Cricket Association (YDCA) presentation night on the weekend when he was presented with Sweeney Cup trophies for most bowling wickets and best bowling average.
His 166 runs, top score of 79 not out, and five catches also earned him runner-up in the Sweeney Cup Cricketer of the Season, behind Dalton’s Brent Poidevin.
Next best for Harden in the Sweeney Cup cricketer of the season points was Will Manwaring, whilst Tyler Allen finished fifth in the batting with an average of 54.
Local cricketer Nathan Schofield impressed in the Triggs Shield, finishing third in the batting average with 43.57 and fourth in the batting aggregate with 305.
YDCA president Dave O’Brien praised the efforts of Harden Cricket Club members Kelvin Brown and Matt Schofield in fielding two teams this season.
He was also impressed by Jeff’s debut senior season.
“He is a dominant young man and we hope to see more of him in the Triggs Shield next season,” Dave said.
“He could easily make the step up.”
Having two teams in the competition allowed Kelvin to make his return to competitive cricket and play alongside sons Martin and Jeff.
Jeff said the team had a lot of fun and were proud of their achievements.
“It’s a higher standard, everyone plays for fun and in the right spirit but the skill level is higher,” Jeff said.
“I had some good partnerships with dad and it was great fun playing with my brother, although I seemed to always get out when he was in.”
He believes playing alongside his dad also allowed him to learn a lot more from the experienced cricketer.
“He only played half a season and he was still just three runs off beating me, so I’ve got a lot to learn from him,” Jeff said.
He is undecided yet whether next season he will play in the Sweeney Cup or step up to the Triggs Shield, but for now is focused on improving in another sport.
This season Jeff is playing with the Binalong Brahmans youth league side following several years off from rugby league in favour of local soccer.
All three Brahmans sides have started their season well- more below.
