It is something no-one should have to face alone.
This is why the Harden- Murrumburrah Can Assist branch operates under the famous motto “You’ll Never Walk Alone”; to remind sufferers, supporters and survivors that help is never far away.
Last Saturday morning the local branch held its annual performance morning in the Murrumburrah High School hall, bringing together people from all walks of life.
The school holidays meant the concert saw lower numbers than in previous years, but branch president Monica O’Connor said the morning was a great success.
“The purpose of these days is mainly to provide entertainment to survivors and their families,” Monica said.
“For our performers to give up their time is very generous and they know it makes a big difference to those here.”
Among the performers was 12-year-old Hennessy Catholic College student Harry Cleverdon.
Harry’s family are close with members of the Harden Can Assist branch and he first performed for them at last year’s Christmas party.
The audience members were keen for a repeat performance, and Harry was more than happy to oblige.
The young multi-instrumentalist opened by sharing his family’s recent personal connection to cancer.
He performed a variety of classic and modern hits from Billy Joel to Bruno Mars on both the piano and guitar, and dedicated his rendition of Ed Sheeran’s “I See Fire” to the victims of the Germanwings disaster.
Earlier in the morning the talented Peter O’Connor, Keith Eatock and Joe Kinsela opened proceedings with classic songs from the WWI era including “Send Me Away With a Smile” and “Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag”.
The trio were accompanied by Stewart Bruce on piano and interspersed the songs with solo performances and a Trooper Bluegum poetry reading.
Peter and his wife Julie will be performing war songs this coming Sunday on the Canberra Railway Museum “Our Boys Train” tour from Canberra to Bungendore in remembrance of the centenary of Gallipoli.
