According to ABS-CBN News, the baby's single mother, Papua New Guinean Jenifer Pavolaurea, 25, tried to smuggle her child through border protection because she did not have the necessary paperwork for arrival in PNG. She had overstayed her visa in the Philippines.
Assistant general manager for security and emergency services of the Manila International Airport Authority, Vincente Guerson identified the owner of the backpack as Ms Pavolaurea. She was questioned about her overstaying by an immigration officer before the baby was found.
The woman was eventually allowed to depart for PNG, and was not arrested, but turned over to a certain John Frederick Camarines, ABS-CBS News reported.
