The Spaniard defied conventional golfing wisdom when playing his ball, submerged near the edge of a water hazard, out of the drink at the Honda Classic at Palm Beach Gardens in Florida.
Garcia, four-over through the opening eight holes, resorted to the desperate measure after his drive flew the fairway on the 18th during Thursday's opening round.
 
Not wanting to take a drop and give up another shot, Garcia donned the rain jacket and flayed at his ball which burst out of the water and nestled 25-metres ahead of him on the fairway.
The end result? Garcia would play his approach to the centre of the green before two putts helped him escape with a par.
And the rest of his round was proof enough the bizarre decision to play out of the water might have been a good one.
Garcia played the front nine - after starting his round on the 10th hole - in two-under to finish his opening salvo at two-over, seven shots behind overnight leader Jim Herman (USA).
