Djokovic [1] d Murray [3] 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 6-2

The Scotsman struggled with a badly blistered foot, while the top-ranked Serbian was relentless.

Two years ago, Djokovic came back from a shocking first set tie-break to become the first man in the Open era to win three consecutive Australian titles.

He ran away from Murray, who had his foot bound mid-match, in a four-set battle that lasted three hours and 40 minutes.

"It's definitely my favourite grand slam. My most successful grand slam. I love this court," Djokovic said.

2012

Djokovic [1] d Rafael Nadal [2] 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5

These two champions kept fans up until the early hours of the morning in a battle to remember.

The first set alone lasted 80 minutes.

Nadal took the lead early, but Djokovic rallied.

At one point Djokovic, who beat Murray in a punishing five-set semi to get to the final, lay on his back on the court and looked unable to get up.

Both players were exhausted and cramping badly at the end of the match, which lasted nearly six hours – the longest final in a major championship.

The final was proclaimed one of the best ever seen at Melbourne Park.

2011

Djokovic [3] d Murray [5] 6-4, 6-2, 6-3

Remember when Murray was Britain's perpetual disappointment, always knocking on the door of greatness but never quiet getting there?

Djokovic crushed Murray at the Australian Open four years ago, wiped him off the court in a three set match which, after the first set, the Scotsman never looked close to contesting.

This was a year before Murray won the US Open, two years before he won Wimbledon. The British press slammed him for yet another on-court mental collapse.

Murray declared after the match that he needed time away from the sport, to spend time with his family, friends and girlfriend.

2010

Roger Federer [1] d Murray [5] 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (13-11)

Murray wept openly when he lost the 2010 Australian Open final to Roger Federer in straight sets.

Then just 22 and in the biggest game of his career, Murray got into the final when Rafael Nadal retired from their match, citing a knee injury.

Although Federer fell behind in every service game in the first set, he recovered all except one and knocked the younger man's confidence going into the second.

Murray rallied in the third, which went to a tie-breaker, but Federer saved five set points and eventually took the match.

Federer was gracious in victory, telling Murray: "Andy, you're too good a player not to win a grand slam, so don't worry about it."

The next day the Swiss champion said he said he was feeling so fresh he could go skiing.

2008

Djokovic [3] d Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2)

Djokovic became the first Serbian to win a grand slam when he beat Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in four sets at the 2008 Australian Open.

Charismatic Tsonga, then ranked 38, was the crowd favourite at the tournament, the underdog who came to Melbourne Park unseeded and reached the final.

Formerly a relative unknown, Tsonga was suddenly considered a future champion with his swagger and changeable playing style.

But Djokovic was too good that Sunday night.

After losing the first set, he managed a cracking backhand to give himself a break point and that changed the direction of the match halfway through the second, when the players were locked at 3-3.
