Commenting on earlier stories that Chan was among 20 death row prisoners scheduled for execution in Indonesia this year, attorney-general spokesman Tony Spontana said: "He does have one more chance".

Mr Spontana was referring to the fact that Chan, 31, is yet to receive a response from Indonesian president Joko Widodo to his appeal for clemency.

"Andrew Chan is on the list of those sentenced to death however he still has one more chance, which is clemency," Mr Spontana said.

"The president has not responded to his request for clemency."

However hopes are dimming after the other Bali Nine member on death row, Myuran Sukumaran, received a letter on January 7 rejecting his clemency bid.

Mr Spontana said Sukumaran would be among the next group of death row prisoners executed.

"It could be this year, it could be next year," he told Fairfax Media.

Chan's lawyer, Julian McMahon said: "As far as I know, Andrew has not received a letter and I've no other information on that".

Chan and Sukumuran were sentenced to death by firing squad in 2006 for being involved in a conspiracy to import 8.2kg of heroin from Bali to Australia.

They based their clemency bids on the strong efforts they have made at rehabilitation since they were locked in Kerobokan prison in 2005.

In a comment posted on the Friends of Andrew Chan Facebook page on Tuesday, Chan, who turned 31 on Monday, thanked his supporters and said he was praying there would  be many more birthdays.

"We are trusting that the Indonesian President will see that the work we are doing and the work we want to do will make a positive difference in rehabilitating people here and in other places too," he wrote.

"I have, we have, so many plans …dreams …my kitchen - to teach people hospitality is being worked on at the moment …Myu has more plans for teaching art which is so important to the Balinese," he wrote.

"We are, with your encouragement able to keep on doing that even with the current situation. So I thank you from the bottom of my heart." He finished his post with the hashtag ‪#‎keephopealive‬

Meanwhile there has been an ongoing dispute between Indonesia's constitutional and supreme courts over how many times prisoners can seek judicial reviews.

On January 11, Indonesian newspaper Tempo reported that a meeting had occurred between the Indonesian Attorney-General's office, the Supreme Court, the Constitutional Court, law enforcement agencies and the justice minister.

The meeting reportedly agreed that death row prisoners whose clemency applications had been rejected would be executed and death row prisoners would not be permitted to submit more than once judicial review application.
