ANOTHER week of mainly fine warm days and very cool nights and what a magnificent weekend it was for the poetry competition, the ladies golf tournament and my 80th birthday, celebrations of which lasted three days.

I said I was not intending to mention that fact in the paper but I was told that I write up everyone else's so do your own.
I had a wonderful day on Friday with a surprise lunch at the hotel with friends gathered together by Ethel. Thank you so much Ethel and thank you to those who were able to come.
Very unexpectedly (for I did not want presents) those ladies presented me with a new bowls bag so it seems I will have to continue to play bowls.
A family dinner at the hotel on Saturday night was most enjoyable with Don and my two kids, daughter in law and two grand daughters. The biggest surprise of the lot was when the golf committee presented me with a magnificent pink flowering azalea. Thank you to all those people and to those who sent cards or took the time to phone me. I really do appreciate all of that. (I tell everyone that I am sure I am a 16-year-old trapped in an 80-year-old body and I am sure many others feel that way too.) The only down side of the weekend was the fact that my adopted old dog Coco was not very well. Enough about me.

The Red Cross Big Cake Bake unfortunately chose the wrong weekend with the Arabin Cup at the golf club and preparations for the poetry competition probably engaging the time of many people. We did have a good yarn to some of the poets.
There was much more to sell than I had expected but fewer customers than we had hoped for, nevertheless most of the cakes were sold and the Red Cross members were quite pleased that the event raised just under $400. Kathy Mitchell won the raffle of two Red Cross centenary roses - with the last ticket sold - and drawn by Nicole in the post office.
Unfortunately I did not get to any of the poetry sessions. Robyn will I am sure provide a detailed account of the activities so I will just pass on the comments that I heard, that the organisation of the competition was absolutely magnificent.
Who would doubt that with Robyn and Liz Murphy and their helpers at the helm? Those I spoke to were lavish in their praise of the organisation, and of course, the poetry, so congratulations to those people responsible for a huge weekend.

Sunday was a glorious day for the ladies annual golf tournament but, alas, that was not enough incentive for many players from other clubs to attend. That seems to be par for the course, could we say. Not many tournaments are attracting the numbers we had in previous times and Yass had only 20 for their big day last week.
Sure, many do not like the sand greens but they have always been there and in the bygone glory days I am certain the players looked on it as a bit of an adventure to take part in the Binalong tournament.
Thank you to the south west president and secretary, Julie and Marcia for attending and to the other ladies who were there. Again Betty Stanton from Young travelled alone from Young and I think it is the first time she has not taken home a trophy .I reckon when Betty does not come it may be time to shelve the tournament.
The A grade scratch winner was Marcia Phillips from Coota while Kate Crisp from Boorowa took out the handicap.
The B grade scratch winner was Helen Curtis after a countback from Ethel Lee and Ethel then claimed the handicap trophy. Nearest the pins went to Monica Good from Boorowa and Helen Curtis. Janet Bamford from Yass won the veteran's event.
The men's Saturday golf was won by Dave Bedford and Chris Glover was Sunday's man of the game.
On the program for next week is Val Brooker's trophy for the ladies and Kevin Spencer's for the men. Max Graham will provide Sunday's trophy for the men's nine holes round and hopefully, those ladies who are fit enough will go to the Boorowa ladies' tournament.
On Sunday, September 28, grab a partner for the two person ambrose event to be played on the annual Allan Field Memorial day. There will also be nine holes comps for both men and ladies.
Our ladies team at the Boorowa Bowls Friendship Day last week won their game against a very friendly team from Grenfell but were unable to get near any of the trophies. Of course, that is what we go for, a pleasant friendly game. We are going to try again at Coota this week so I can use my new bag.

Star winners at the school this week were Kaitlyn Daly, Nazareth Segaukaz, Jake Fleet and Olivia McColl.
Until next time.
