THE first day of spring and what a great day it was - but I believe it is not going to last. I don't think anyone will be too upset if there is some more rain in the next few days.

For a change, the weather for the men's annual golf tournament was ideal on both days. The numbers on Saturday were disappointing but on Sunday 30 players turned up to test their skills on the sand greens, even the locals. Some definitely lacked skill in that area.
A couple of records were set, Kevin Spencer, usually a very consistent player, had what he reckoned was the worst score of his life and Godfrey Regan had what would seem to be the highest score recorded on one hole. Both could still laugh about it.
Michael Paterson was not greatly troubled by the greens or the course when he had 70 off the bat to claim the A grade scratch event.
He said he hadn't played for a month and was a little puzzled why his clubs and towel and golfing gear looked different only to find out that Nan (Ethel) had washed everything and cleaned his clubs. How's that for being spoiled. Michael was on the 14th green to also bag the nearest the pin trophy. David Field claimed the handicap event with a very solid round.
Mitch Grange took out the B grade scratch and Dave Bedford had an excellent round for the B grade handicap. I think Peter Curtis was nearest the pin.
Clancy Grigg beat the rest of the nine hole players and so was awarded that trophy.
No doubt the football on Saturday took away a few possible players so the field on Saturday was small. Sam Porter and Monica Field won the scratch event while Ethel and Dave Bedford took home the handicap trophies. The nearest the pin trophies went to Helen Curtis and Brian Brooker.
It was a very successful weekend and I am sure the organisers were quite happy. It is such a pity that there are no new players around to swell the numbers at the local club.
Sunday, September 14 is the date for the ladies tournament so hopefully the weather will be kind and it will inspire some players from other clubs to compete
Programmed for next Saturday is a medley nine holes round for a club trophy and Sunday is Legacy Day (which was, at one time, a really big day) and Michael Middleton will donate the trophy for another medley event.

Congratulations to the local girls and boys who won the final of the football comp in front of a huge crowd on Saturday.
Some of the boys were well enough to enjoy a barbecue at the club on Sunday dressed in some amazing costumes. I really liked the fake tattoos, what a great way to have a tattoo that can be removed.
I believe that Ben Spencer was the star of the day when, on bended knee, after the game, he proposed to long time girl friend, Ally Giles. Congratulations to both of them.

At present Clive Langfield is still in hospital. Though far from well, he hopes he might be able to come home this week.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery also go to Lindsay McDonald, who is a patient in the Canberra Hospital following a very serious illness and surgery. At present her visitors are limited to family members. Lindsay was home just a very short time after an overseas trip when she became so ill. She is recovering slowly.

Some school staff members are this week attending a two-day conference in Wagga to learn about the new school management plan for next year.
The children have been invited to display some of their work, including aboriginal artwork, in the Harden show on Saturday. They are also busy practising for the Arabin Cup.
The kids are still enjoying learning to dance as part of the after school activities, but only two weeks left to perfect their moves as next term they will be starting cricket.
Both Mrs Ferry and Mr Bennett have birthdays this week.
Star winners last week were Kaitlyn Daly, Hayley Daley, Ryan Ings and Jack Trethowan.
Until next time
