The Arnotts’ biscuit logo is as recognisable as any in Australia but how did the cocky get into the act?
William Arnott came to Australia during the gold rush period and opened a bakery and confectionery shop in Maitland, NSW. Arnott had a small oven near the back of his shop where he baked biscuits during the day and baked the bread by night.
The cockatoo, which was a gift from a sea captain, used to sneak a peck at a biscuit from time to time, so Arnott’s daughter-in-law decided to sketch it eating the Sao biscuit, hence the logo.
