And when completed the supermarket in Neill Street will provide a significant boost to local employment opportunities.
John Krnc, one of the principals and director of the Krnc Group, which is developing the supermarket, confirmed yesterday that when the building is completed that the Krnc Group would be operating it as an IGA supermarket.
The Krnc Group already operates a number of IGA supermarkets in Canberra, with stores in Charnwood, Erindale, Hackett, Hawker, Karabar, Kippax and Lyneham. The group also has a supermarket in Gundagai.
Mr Krnc said the construction of the store was expected to be completed in four to six weeks and once the construction work was completed the store would then be fitted out.
He said he expected the store to open August.
The building is being constructed by Burton Constructions Pty Ltd from Wagga Wagga. The multi-million dollar building was designed by Project Planning and Design, also from Wagga Wagga.
Mr Krnc said when operational he expected the supermarket would employ about 25 people, either on a permanent, part time or casual basis.
The supermarket would carry a full range of grocery items, fruit and vegetables and have a delicatessen and a liquor section.
Mr Krnc said he was very pleased with the appearance of the store as his group had purposefully sought to have the new building blend in with the existing streetscape.
Work began on the site last year after contracts were signed in October between the Krnc Group and Burton Constructions.
