THE cold weather seemed to get the better of golfers during last Saturday’s Monthly Medal stroke event when only three of the 28 starters were able to play below their handicap.

Matt Schofield shot a career best back nine in his round of 90-24-66 to win the trophy supplied by Coopers Choice Cut Butchery and also the ‘B’ Grade Medal. The ‘A’ Grade Medal was won by Mr Consistency Mark Parker with a fine 74-7-67.
Bill Kildea’s 69 nett headed the ball competition, which went down to 75 nett. The other ball winners apart from Bill were Ron Page, Ian Kinleyside, Brian Wales, Craig Filmer and Jarrod Filmer. Nearest the pin on the 18th hole was won by Ian Clarke-Bruce.
The last two Dempster Cup quarter final positions were also decided on Saturday when Doug Baker defeated Tim Beveridge on the 19th hole and Chris Hocking defeated Jamie Cantrill one up.
The draw for the quarter finals, which should be decided by the August 3, is:
Geoff Bates versus Brian Wales
Doug Baker versus Bernie Parker
Chris Hocking versus Ian Clarke-Bruce
Eric Kuhn versus Darrell Cassidy
Thanks to the efforts of club captain Geoff Bates the new look score cards will hopefully be available this weekend.
The men’s 18 holes have been double indexed to save confusion for those longer handicap golfers while the ladies match index has undergone some changes. New card sponsors are Parker’s Smash Repairs, Delta Agriculture, Tegra, Landmark, Thompsons Rural and Harden Fuel Supplies.
Ladies golf
The ladies July Monthly Medal was won by Karen Glover with a very good round of 65 nett which also earned her the trophy supplied by Ev Shea and possibly a shot or two reduction of her handicap. Runner up to Karen was Val Kerrison who also had a good day with a 68 nett. Ev Shea and Maryanne Fitzgerald both recorded 72 nett to make up the ball competition winners.
Men’s pennants
The final round of this year’s pennant series saw the Harden team unable to take advantage of playing at home when the team went down to Cootamundra three matches to two.
Peter Steinke won his match 6/5, Craig Filmer won 4/3, Ron Page lost 6/5, while Tam Kennedy and Tim Beveridge both lost their matches on the 19th hole.
This was a disappointing conclusion to the series after such a promising start where after two rounds the team was sitting in equal first position.
Both Ron Page and Peter Steinke have announced their retirement from pennant golf to hopefully make way for younger players to represent the club.
Midweek veterans
The 28 rounds played in last weeks stableford event produced a large range of scores which spanned 21 stableford points. June Spencer chalked up another victory for the girls when her 31 points gave her a comfortable 3 shot margin over joint runners-up Tam Kennedy and Greg Heycox.
This weekend
This Saturday the first round of the year’s most popular championship event, the mixed foursomes, will be played for trophies donated by Darren Sargent of Tegra.
For those men suffering from rejection by the ladies an individual stableford will also be played.
