THE Jugiong Swim Club held a family fun day on Saturday, January 28, to mark 40 years since the formation of the club.
The day was family orientated and everyone got into the spirit of the day, to have fun. With a great crowd turning out for the celebrations it meant lots of fun with age races, relays, the much awaited competition with the belly flop of the day.
Twelve family teams competed with the winning team, Butt 2, consisting of James, Nathan, Beth, and Tim Butt taking the lead to a speedy time home.
James, Tim and Beth were members of the swim club in years gone by and were more than happy to dig out the togs and swim for Jugiong once again.
The business house relay saw six teams take to the water with Gundagai Earthmoving taking out the title. Members of the team were Jason, Tash, Beth and Jack Flanagan, a force to be reckoned with in years to come. Tash was also a former member of the club and Beth and Jack are swimming up a storm in the club for 2012.
Archie Hyles, although slight in build, came up trumps with the loudest belly flop of the day.
This event proved very popular not just with the children but some of the dads thought they would give it a go as well.
Winners of the age races were Nathan Butt, Tasmin Makeham, Jack Flanagan, Matilda Carberry, Brad Luff, Jane Lemon, Beth Flanagan, Kalem Makeham, Olivia Tuckwell, Patrick Kingwell, Alex Kelleher, Katia Manton and James Wallis.
The medley relay winning powerhouse team was Beth Flanagan, Grace Harpley, Alex Kelleher & Sharni Manton.
James Wallis and DJ Cribb were triumphant with the rescue race, which saw three heats of kids of all ages showing their talents as they rescued their partner and took them to safety.
This is something the kids of the Jugiong club practice at training and their skills were put on display for all.
Swim club president Tash Flanagan spoke of the importance and how much appreciated the original committee were in setting up the club and to everyone who played a part in the pool formation and building and to those dedicated people who have kept the club running so strongly for so many years.
There was and still are so many community minded people who set a goal and work toward it to establish and maintain such a wonderful pool and club for all to share.
Hugh and Joan Henry who flew home from New Zealand with their son Colin and his family for the event were presented with Life Membership for their 20 years plus of coaching and dedication to the club, they played a huge role and were thanked for their contribution with an engraved silver tray.
Secretary of the club Paula Butt wound up the formalities thanking all those who had come back for the day to celebrate and thanked George and Melissa who are the current coaches and were also very strong members of the club as kids for all their hard work and dedication in training the kids now.
The swim club provided a lovely BBQ tea and refreshments for all to enjoy to finish the day off.
Thanks to chief cooks Marianne Wallis, Jason and Danielle Manton and club parents who organised the BBQ and provided the yummy cakes and slices.
Thanks also goes to the Harden Shire for their continued support of our pool and club.
So much positive feedback has been given to the club since the day we might have to make it an annual family event.
