The boys were unable to field enough numbers the previous week during school holidays against Wagga City, which resulted in a forfeit, however they showed they will be a force to be reckoned with in 2012.
The U17s are the only side to fly the flag for junior and senior rugby this year in Harden Murrumburrah and after plenty of work are starting to gel.
Doubles went to Riley Manwaring and Zac Allen. Josh Quinn, Jayden Nicholls, Josh Logue and Nathan Solah each reached the in goal for a five pointer.
The boys started the match at a furious pace applying plenty of pressure to the Cootamundra defence which resulted in some excellent tries. Josh Logue had his kicking shoes on for the day booting seven from eight. Josh’s try was also a length of the field chip chase and regather that brought the crowd alive.
All of the boys impressed coaches Ben Irving and Matt Stadtmiller however in the forwards those that stood out were Scott Piesley, Michael West and Cody Vincent with the latter finding out in his first year of union how to win the ball in the lineout on his own throw and disrupt the opposition effectively.
The scoreline for the day was 54-14 and showed a convincing win for the young Devils.
Ball security and the ruck need to be worked on by all players but things are coming along nicely.
The club asks that during any home games past players, old boys and supporters come down and watch the talent in this side as they are the future of Harden rugby.
The senior Devils have been defunct for several seasons now due to lack of employment, player numbers and a generational shift however these lads will do the club proud in 2012.
During home games canteen facilities will operate and plans are being put in place to have the U17s play in a curtain raiser to a Harden versus Murrumburrah match or an invitational side later in the year.
