The Red Devils recorded their first win of the season on Saturday in a very physical match against the Yass Rams at Roberts Park.
The day kicked off with a 15 a side touch game between the Harden old boys and the Lindfield Lillywhites with the Sydney side running out victors four tries to one in the game.
The Sydney side who train several times a week were impressed with the Harden boys skill.
The main rugby match saw Harden start strongly with John Ryan slicing through under the posts after which he converted his try to take Harden 7 -0 up.
Harden welcomed back Joel Blundell and Nathan Muscat to the side with Joel’s experience showing through to help guide the boys around the park at fly half with Musky everywhere in defence.
Pat O’Keefe had a great game after moving in from the wing to breakaway and it looks like he has found a home in that position playing with ferocity at the breakdown and running elusively in attack.
The Yass boys posted their first points soon after with a try in the left corner which wasn’t converted taking the score to 7-5.
Big Ben Brady began to find his rhythm in defence and pulled off a massive hit to inspire the boys. Outside centre Pete Berzins had a great charge to the line shrugging off five defenders to set up a try for Adam Walsh which John Ryan converted taking the score to
14 -5.
The second half saw the Yass and Harden boys pick up the intensity with several scuffles breaking out which seemed to fire the boys up.
Clint Stevens spent the remainder of the second half in the bin as did one of the Yass players after another scuffle saw the red card out of the pocket.
Yass had a shot at goal that fell well short but soon after managed to score a converted try to come within two points.
Harden gave away a penalty close to the posts and another kicker was called up but failed to secure the three points probably distracted by bird life.
The Devils held out repeated efforts by Yass to clinch the victory and the team song was sung for the first time this year and hopefully not the last.
The Bendigo Bank manager Ralph Hawkins was present to hand over a cheque to president Fleet Stevens with Bendigo coming onboard as a sleeve and goal post pad sponsor and soon to be erected will be Bendigo Bank signage. It is great to see the bank sponsoring local rugby and all of the players and supporters are thankful for the help as it ensures that 25 locals can play rugby.
The Bendigo Bank points went to Adam Walsh 3, Ben Brady 2, and Peter Berzins 1.
A trivia night will be held at the Country Club towards the end of July with each player needing to organise a table of six to eight people.
This week Harden has the bye and it would be great to see everyone up at McLean Oval to cheer our league brothers on in the top of the table clash against the Binalong Brahmans.
July 10 will see Harden off to Crookwell in their next match and maybe the boys can get two wins in a row.
